Photo restoration near me, from the biscuit tin

· Ages Ago · 6 min read

If you have been looking for photo restoration near me, you probably had a shop in mind. A person, a scanner, a wait of several days, and the original print leaving the house.

You may not need any of that.

The photograph is already here, in a shoebox, an album or a biscuit tin. Lay it on a table, away from the window, take a picture with your phone, and you can see it mended in about a minute. The preview is free. You pay only if you keep it.

Here is how to choose, without posting the original.

What is worth asking first

Damage is rarely the thing that goes wrong. Faces are.

A crease can be eased. A tear can be joined. Fading can be evened. If the person in the picture no longer looks like themselves, none of that helps. Before you post a print, or pay, ask the same questions of a high street restorer and of anyone online, including us.

  • Will every face be compared with the original, and kept if it drifts?
  • Can you see the mended version before you pay?
  • If a corner is missing, will a new face be invented to fill it?
  • Do you have to hand over the original, or will a photograph of the print do?
  • Is there an app, a subscription, or anything that renews?
  • If you want a copy on the wall, do prints go to UK addresses?

If the answer on faces is woolly, stop there. A smooth picture of someone else is not a family photograph mended.

Photo repair near me, without posting the original

A restorer with a shop can do careful work by hand. That still means days, a higher price, and the print in someone else’s studio. For a single heirloom you are not in a hurry with, that can be the right choice.

A lot of family photographs do not need that. They need the tear closed, the crease lifted, the orange cast of a 1970s print calmed, and the people left looking like themselves.

You can do photo repair near me without leaving the house, and without putting the original in the post. Photograph the print. If it is in two halves, lay the pieces together flat and take one picture of the whole. If you already have a scan, upload that.

Ages Ago is for that version of the job. An AI image model mends the photo. No person retouches it. Every face is compared with your original. If a face has drifted, we try once more with stricter instructions. If it still isn’t right, we keep your original face, cleaned up, and only add colour. After you keep a photo, you have 14 days to ask for a stricter version if it doesn’t look like them.

What old photo restoration near me can mend

Tears, creases, folds, cracks, scratches, dust, stains, water marks, mould spots and fading can all be mended. It works on black and white, sepia and colour prints. Colour can be added to a black and white photo if you would like it.

A faded colour print from the 1970s to the 2000s that has turned orange, pink or pale can be enhanced. The colour cast is corrected, without the picture being repainted.

What cannot be done matters just as much.

A face torn away or missing from the print cannot be put back. That area is filled in plainly from what is around it. A new face is never invented. A badly blurred photo stays soft, because detail the camera did not catch is not made up. We cannot make someone smile, remove a person, add someone, or change a background. We cannot recolour one dress on request.

If both halves of a torn photo still exist, lay them together and photograph them as one picture.

Colour is a best guess

A black and white photo records only light and dark. A red coat and a green one can look the same grey. Colour, when you ask for it, is a best guess at how the photo looked on the day, never a record of the real colours.

Sepia and black and white photos get a repaired version that keeps their own tones, and a repaired version with colour. You can then try a warmer or cooler overall colour.

When you need one photograph for a funeral

If you are arranging a funeral or a memorial, you may need one clear photo for the order of service, or for a frame, and you may need it today.

We can have one gently restored photo ready to download as soon as you keep it. The full-size file is fine for an order of service. Prints and frames take a few working days to arrive, so for a service very soon, download the file and take it to a local printer.

Every face is still compared with your original. We only repair the photo you send. We never ask for anyone’s age or expression to be changed.

What it costs, and what it does not

The preview is free. Keeping a photo costs £5.99. There is no subscription and nothing renews. You pay once, and only for the pictures you decide to keep.

How the mending works, from the photograph of the print to the files you keep, is on how it works.

How to photograph the print

You don’t need a scanner, though a scan is welcome.

  1. Lay the print flat on a table, not in your lap.
  2. Keep it out of window light, so there is no glare on the surface.
  3. Fill the frame with the whole photograph, even if the corners are damaged.
  4. If it is torn in two, push the halves together and photograph them as one.
  5. Use the phone you already have. We’ll do the rest.

A picture of a picture on a screen, or a photo still behind glass, is a poorer start. Take the print out of the frame if you can do so safely.

Choosing well, then starting

Old photo restoration near me used to mean a shop, a queue and a week. For many family prints it now means a clear table, a phone, and a minute.

You still have to choose well. Insist on the faces. Insist on seeing your own photo mended before you pay. Don’t let anyone invent a person who was never in the picture. Keep the original in the tin.

When you are ready, Ages Ago will mend the photo in about a minute, compare every face with the original, and show you the result first. See it mended.

Questions people ask

Do I need a local shop for photo restoration near me?

Not usually. Photograph the print on a table, away from the window. We'll mend it in about a minute and the original stays in the tin.

Will the faces still look like them?

Yes. Every face is compared with your original. If a face changes, we keep your original face, cleaned up, and only add colour.

Can you repair a torn photo from a phone picture?

Yes, usually, as long as the picture is still there. Lay both halves together flat and photograph them as one. A face that has been torn away cannot be put back.

How long does photo repair take?

About a minute for the free preview, then about 20 seconds more to prepare your files if you keep the photo.

Is there a subscription?

No. There is no subscription and nothing renews. You pay once for a photo or a pack.
