Personalised gift photo ideas from old family prints

· Ages Ago · 7 min read

A personalised gift photo only works if it still looks like them. The ones people keep on the sideboard usually began in a shoebox or a biscuit tin: a creased wedding print, a faded holiday snap, a black and white portrait with a fold through the sky.

You do not need a new sitting, a painted version or a face the camera never caught. You need the print you already have, mended so the tears and spots recede, with every face kept as it was.

See your photo mended before you pay. The preview is free. Keeping a photo costs £5.99. You can then download the file, or order a UK print or frame.

What to look for

Likeness comes first. If Nan no longer looks like Nan, the wrapping paper will not save it. Ask whether every face is compared with the original, and what happens if a face drifts.

At Ages Ago, an AI image model does the mending and no person retouches photos. Every face in the mended version is compared with your original. If a face has drifted, we try once more with stricter instructions. If it still is not right, we keep your original face, cleaned up, and only add colour. The free preview comes with a face report, such as how many faces were found and whether they match.

The print itself matters next. Tears, creases, folds, cracks, scratches, dust, stains, water marks, mould spots and fading can all be mended, as long as the picture is still there underneath. If both halves of a torn photo still exist, lay them together flat on a table and photograph them as one picture. A corner torn away is filled in plainly from what is around it. A face that is missing cannot be put back, and we never invent a new person.

Then decide what you are giving:

  • a file you can print locally, add to an order of service, or send on
  • an A4 print on fine-art paper
  • a framed copy at 30 x 40 cm with a mount

Prints go to UK addresses only. The mended file can be downloaded and printed anywhere. There is no subscription and nothing renews. You pay once for a photo, or for credits from a pack.

Time is the last practical point. The download is ready once you keep the photo. An A4 print usually arrives in 3 to 7 working days and a framed print in 4 to 7 working days, after a 2-hour window in which you can change the order.

Personalised photo gift ideas from the biscuit tin

A photo gift for grandparents often works best when it is a picture they have not seen clearly in years. Think of the wedding portrait with a crease across the dress, the school group with spots of mould, or the 1970s colour print that has turned orange or pink.

Useful starting points:

  • a black and white or sepia print, kept in its own tones, or with colour added as a best guess at how it looked on the day
  • a faded colour print from the 1970s to the 2000s, with the colour cast corrected rather than repainted
  • a torn print laid flat in two halves and photographed as one picture
  • a group photo (with more than four faces, small faces are kept from your original, cleaned up)

Colour is a best guess, never a record of the real colours. A black and white photo records only light and dark, so a red coat and a green one can look the same grey. Once a colour version is ready, you can try warmer or cooler colour. You cannot recolour one thing, such as a dress, and we do not take requests to change a background.

We only repair the photo you send. We will not make someone smile, change their age or expression, remove a person or add someone who was not there.

Photo gift ideas for grandparents

For a photo gift for grandparents, pick a picture they would recognise at a glance. A studio portrait is not better than a snapshot on the back step, as long as the faces are clear enough to mend. A badly blurred photo stays soft, because detail the camera did not catch is not invented.

A younger relative often mends one photo as a present, then orders a framed copy for the room where it will actually be seen. Someone looking after a whole album may work through several prints over months, using credits when they are ready. Either way, photograph the print on a table, away from the window. We do not take photos by post or scan them for you. Use your phone, or upload a scan you already have.

When you keep a photo you get the full-size file, 3840 pixels on the long side and enlarged for printing from the picture you saw, plus before-and-after pictures and an 8-second reveal clip. Files are kept for 90 days after you keep the photo, and we email you before they are deleted.

A personalised photo frame gift

A personalised photo frame gift makes sense when the photo will live on a wall or a sideboard, not only in a message thread.

Prints and frames are A4 fine-art prints, or framed at 30 x 40 cm with a white mount. Frame colours, as named by our print partner, are black, white, natural, gold, silver, brown, dark grey and light grey. Delivery to a UK address is included in the print price.

Your whole photo is printed with a clean white margin, so no head is ever trimmed. Framed copies are for upright and square photos. You can order up to 5 copies of each photo. Other sizes and canvas are not offered.

For 2 hours after paying, you can switch to another version, change the frame colour, fix the address or cancel the print for a refund. After that, the print is on its way. If a print arrives damaged, you can report it on your order page within 30 days of delivery.

A personalised Christmas photo gift

A personalised Christmas photo gift needs a little more calendar than a birthday. Downloads stay on sale through the season. Prints have a last order date, shown at the top of every page from 1 November. After that date, prints are back on 27 December.

If you are close to the cut-off, keep the photo, download the file and use a local printer. Do not guess the last posting day from memory. Look at the site that day.

Credits from a pack last 12 months from the day you buy it, which is useful if you are mending more than one print and not all of them are for the same occasion.

A personalised memorial photo frame

When you need a photo for an order of service or a memorial frame, the job is to get one clear, gentle copy ready, without changing who they were.

Every face is compared with your original. If a face changes, we keep the original face, cleaned up, with only colour added. We will not make them look as they did later in life.

The download is ready as soon as you keep the photo, and the full-size file is fine for an order of service. Prints and frames take a few working days to arrive, so for a service very soon, download the file and take it to a local printer.

We cannot mend what is not there. A face torn away cannot be put back. Within 14 days of keeping a photo, if it does not look like them, you can ask for a stricter version free, then a credit back or your money back if that still is not right.

How to choose between file, print and frame

What you need What to order When it helps
A copy to send, share or print locally The download Gifts going abroad, an order of service, the family chat
A print to wrap An A4 print UK addresses, a folder, or a frame you already have
Something ready to hang A 30 x 40 cm framed print A living room, a memorial, a big birthday

You can keep the photo first and order the print when you have chosen the version. Black and white or sepia photos get a repaired version that keeps their tones, and a repaired version with colour. Colour photos get an enhanced version that corrects a faded colour cast, and a repaired version. Each photo gets two tries, including warmer colour, cooler colour or stricter with faces.

A few things these gifts are not for

This is for your or your family’s photo, or one you have permission to copy. It is not for passports, ID or official documents. Photos with nudity, including baby photos in the bath, cannot be mended.

Start with the print you have

Photograph the print, see it mended, and only then decide whether to keep it. If you are wrapping a photo gift for grandparents, hanging a personalised photo frame gift, or preparing a quieter memorial copy, the same first step applies.

When you are ready, mend the photo and take it from there.

Questions people ask

Can I use a phone photo of an old print?

Yes. Photograph the print on a table, away from the window, or upload a scan you already have. Ages Ago does not take photos by post or scan them for you.

Will the people still look like themselves?

Every face in the mended version is compared with your original. If a face drifts, we try again with stricter instructions, and if it still is not right we keep your original face, cleaned up, with only colour added.

Can I order a framed print as a gift to a UK address?

Yes. Framed prints are 30 x 40 cm with a white mount, in eight frame colours, and delivery to a UK address is included. Prints are not sent outside the UK; the mended file can be downloaded and printed anywhere.

What if I need the photo for a funeral this week?

The download is ready as soon as you keep the photo, and the full-size file is fine for an order of service. Prints take a few working days, so for a service very soon, download the file and take it to a local printer.

Are the colours from an old black and white photo accurate?

Colour is a best guess at how the photo looked on the day, never a record of the real colours. A red coat and a green one can look the same grey in black and white. You can try warmer or cooler colour once a colour version is ready.
